Takeover completed back in 2021Rapid rise enjoyed into League OneMore funding will be requiredGetty/GOALWHAT HAPPENED?
Two Hollywood superstars completed their stunning takeover at STok Racecourse back in 2021. The Red Dragons were a National League outfit at the time, but a stunning rise up the EFL pyramid has been enjoyed since then. Back-to-back promotions have lifted the club into League One.

Wrexham are no longer in a position to outspend their rivals, as the playing field begins to level out, and that means further investment will be required at some stage. McElhenney has said of that process: “We always knew at a certain point we’d have to bring on some kind of capital partner. When you’re talking about teams that are up in Championship, Premier League level, you’re competing with sovereign nation wealth. We’ve been holding off for as long as we possibly can. We believe that we can make it through this season or as long as we’re playing in a lower league, or below. But once we get into those upper echelons, it’s a lot more difficult.”

Reynolds and McElhenney are also invested in other sporting projects, such as a stake in the Alpine Formula 1 team, while there has been talk of a Philadelphia native trying to buy into his beloved Eagles NFL franchise. McElhenney added on that, with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie reportedly open to parting with a small percentage of his team: “Jeffrey has been a fantastic confidant and mentor and counsel throughout my ownership of Wrexham. I don’t have any comment on the latter.”
WHAT NEXT?
McElhenney is preparing to narrow his focus on Wrexham again, with Reynolds back on board after completing the production of his latest Deadpool movie, and Phil Parkinson’s side – after taking in a pre-season trip to North America – will kick off their 2024-25 campaign at home to Wycombe on August 10.
